Schools Water Portal News
Emphasising the need to create awareness on nature conservation among students, Central Board of Secondary Schools ( CBSE ) has recommended a free platform, Schools Water Portal ( www.schools.indiawaterportal.org ), that has interesting teaching and learning aids such as water projects, stories, fun experiments, working models and movies that help students and teachers explore the subject.
It is developed with the support of organisations including The National Knowledge Commission, The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, National Council for Science and Technology Communication ( NCSTC ) and Centre for Environment Education.
The collaborative portal run by an NGO, Arghyam, based in Bangalore has content contributed by teachers and students apart from experts working in the field.
The resources for teachers include tools to engage students in class with the help of interesting presentations on topics such as ‘Aquatic Ecosystems’, ‘Global Water Resources’, ‘Wetlands of India’ and ‘Water Quality Standard’. The fact sheets on topics such as ‘Interlinking of rivers, ‘Mercury Menance’, ‘Efficient Irrigation System in Arunachal Pradesh’, ‘Johads of Rajasthan’ and ‘Endangered Indian Aquatic Species’ help teachers provide students an in – depth understanding of the topics.
‘Fun Water Experiments’ are simple experiments listed separately for students of primary, middle and high school classes. A manual on rainwater harvesting, case studies, water audit and list of books and films on water are listed under the resources for principals.
“Water conservation is a burning issue that needs the attention of younger generation. CBSE gives importance to environmental studies and nature conservation activities among students of all classes. The site is very useful and the most of the topics discussed are part of the syllabus,” said Principal of Western Ghats International School Vijayalakshmi Menon.
Schools can also register to take part in the ‘Nationwide Fluoride Testing Project for Schools’.
The portal is also available in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
