Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) tie-ups with University of Agriculture of Bulgaria

An international conference on trends in seri-biotechnology held in Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) here for the last three days has opened the doors for collaboration between the Departments of Sericulture of SKU and University of Agriculture of Bulgaria.

Delegates from different universities and institutions on sericulture and from Bulgaria and Ethiopia participated in the seminar.

Various topics related to seri-biotechnology were discussed by presenting lead papers by eminent scientists and research papers by scholars and others.

Participating sericulture scientists felt that research towards evolving new breeds of silkworm, which could sustain the hot climate in Anantapur district, and high yielding breeds of mulberry, which could thrive under water-stressed conditions, was needed.

Special attention

Topics like bio-organic sericulture and its scope for adoption by farmers, the value addition of seri-byproducts had drawn special attention.

The scientists felt that technology could convert sericulture waste into valuable products in medicines, cosmetics and health care sectors apart from fashion.

The non-mulberry sericulture practice could also be explored further in Andhra Pradesh as the pilot projects had shown promising results for adoption.
