Swami Vivekananda Youth Leadership Award for Meenakshi College Student

Chennai: R. Shanmugapriya, student council president of the Meenakshi College for Women, was given the second ‘Swami Vivekananda Youth Leadership Award’ on Sunday.

V.A. Somayajulu, Principal, India Bank Management Academy for Growth and Excellence (IMAGE), gave away the award in the presence of Bodhamayananda, Co-ordinator, Personality Development Project, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama (T. Nagar).

Talking to The Hindu, he said the award was instituted to encourage and recognise youth leadership. It would be presented to a college student or young professional in any field for excellence in character, leadership skills, responsibility and academics.

“While big awards are instituted in the name of corporate excellence and business excellence, there is no such recognition for youth. Hence, we have decided to present Youth Leadership Award every month. It will show to the Nation, who they are, where they are and what they are,” he said.

Currently, the award would be given to students of Chennai-based colleges. The Ashrama would select a college based on certain criteria laid down by them and the college head would be asked to name a student.

Mr. Somayajulu said concentration, consistency and co-operation were three important factors that would enable a person to excel in any field.

Shanmugapriya was presented with Swami Vivekananda’s biography, a portrait, nine complete works of Swami Vivekananda and several other books.
