TAHDCO’s Initiative to make SC / ST Students employable
Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation ( TAHDCO ) has identified Bharathiar University as the nodal centre for conducting a special finishing school for arts and science undergraduates who belong to the Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes ( SC / ST ).
The school, to be sponsored by TAHDCO, will cater to final – year students studying in affiliated colleges of Periyar University, Bharathidasan University, University of Madras, and Bharathiar University.
It is expected to cover nearly 1,200 students in the first phase, which will be from November 2011 to January 2012.
In order to reach this many number of students, the university has decided to use teachers, who it will train, for conducting the finishing schools.
The Department of Extension and Career Guidance of Bharathiar University will conduct this training programme for 60 teachers drawn from 30 affiliated colleges of the four universities, for this purpose.
These teachers will in turn train the SC / ST students of their respective colleges for three months to make them job – ready.
According to M. Jayakumar, Director of the Department of Extension and Career Guidance, the four – day training programme, from October 20, 2011 to October 23, 2011, will be conducted by experts from Tata Consultancy Services ( TCS ) and Wipro Technologies.
“The companies will be involved from the beginning to the end of the training. The experts will focus on making the teachers understand the skill – sets that the industry looks for in students. They will tell the participants what the demands are and what the students need to be trained in,” Mr. Jayakumar told to the Press People.
Bharathiar University would be the training partner. It would prepare and provide all training material in the form of CDs and books, to be distributed to the students.
At the end of the finishing school, the companies would recruit from among those who underwent the training.
On completion of the training programme for the teachers in the Train – the – Trainer mode, the teachers would go back to the respective colleges and identify 50 to 60 SC / ST students from the final – year students, belonging to various disciplines, and train them. The timings would be either after class hours or on weekends.
A first – of – its – kind for arts and science students, the finishing school is expected to mould the students according to the requirements of the industry even while in college. TAHDCO already offered this training to engineering college students.
