Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology to support 500 Life Sciences Projects
The Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) will offer financial assistance to students on 500 life sciences projects.
TNSCST member secretary S. Vincent told reporters on Thursday that the project scholarship programme was likely to be approved soon by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), which would provide funding. The DBT is a unit of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
At present, the TNSCST offers Rs. 5,000 each to about 170 students every year for research in agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental, medical, social and veterinary sciences.
“Students can also use the patent information centre on the TNSCST premises to check the novelty of their projects,” Mr. Vincent said.
The TNSCST has launched a campaign to promote awareness of sanitation in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Salem Corporations. Special lectures, quiz competitions, rallies and exhibitions on sanitation would be conducted in association with educational institutions in each of the cities.
“Diseases such as gastroenteritis, typhoid and cholera can be traced to the same source: drinking water contaminated by human waste,” said Mr. Vincent. Students of Ethiraj College for Women in Chennai, KSG College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore, Lady Doak College in Madurai, AVS College of Arts and Science in Salem and National College in Tiruchi are part of the campaign.
The National Council for Science and Technology has sanctioned Rs. 3 lakh and the TNSCST Rs. 1 lakh for the programme.
