Teach Students Life Skills
Narendra Rai Derla, Head, Department of Kannada, Dr. Shivaram Karanth Government First Grade College, Bellare, called upon the teachers to infuse humane values and life-skills among students.
Delivering the keynote address at the Teachers’ Day celebrations organised by the Department of Public Instruction here on Sunday, Mr. Derla said students from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts always excelled in academical and professional courses.
But, the two districts also had the bad reputation of being communally sensitive ones. It was not proper for anybody to divide the society on the basis of religion and caste, he said.
N. Yogish Bhat, MLA, said that there was enough scope for public-private partnership in creating infrastructure facilities at schools and colleges. Educational institutions and donors should join hands in this regard, he said.
Diwakara Acharya, a teacher of Government PU College, Uppinangady, and K. Kumar, teacher of Government Higher Primary School, Harady, Puttur taluk, who had won the State teacher award for 2009-10, were felicitated.
In addition, seven primary school teachers and five high school teachers, who had won the district-level awards for 2010-11, and 11 retired teachers were felicitated.
Head teachers of 41 schools which had scored cent per cent passes in the SSLC examinations of 2009-10 were given certificates and mementoes.

However, the teachers were now over-burdened with duties other than teaching, he said and urged the Government to relieve them off such works.
Twenty teachers, including five each from Government and aided higher primary schools, Government and aided high schools, unaided higher primary schools and unaided high schools, were felicitated.
In addition, nine retired teachers from Brahmavar Zone and 10 retired teachers from Udupi zone were felicitated on the occasion.
