12 Colleges to receive Free Reference Books
Twelve government colleges and institutions and two IAS training academies have been identified as this year’s beneficiaries of expensive reference books on various subjects donated by a philanthropic US-based couple hailing from Coimbatore.
The Tiruchi Productivity Council (TPC), the local coordinator for the book distribution project, has received the shipment sent through a container at the Chennai harbour by the doctor couple Aruna Sethupathi and Sethupathi settled in Chicago.
The couple have been spending 10,000 to 15,000 US dollars for carrying out their pet project of sending container loads of used books, gathered with laborious personal efforts and painstakingly packed by the family members for shipment from USA to their motherland.
Of the 450 boxes of books sent by them, 174 were meant for colleges in the central region of Tamil Nadu.
The only stipulation of the donors is that the institutions should inscribe ‘gift from the USA’ on the books before numbering and cataloguing them in the libraries for use by students.
The books are on world history, geography, sociology, psychology and management.
The institutions are expected to acknowledge to Dr. Aruna Sethupathi through mail : firstname.lastname@example.org, receipt of the books.
They can also directly send to the donor their wish lists of books for next year, according to Raja Mutthirulandi, Secretary General of the TPC, who has borne the cost of transporting the consignment of books from Chennai to Tiruchi in his capacity as the local coordinator of the project carried out by the US couple since 2001.
