Tamil Nadu Agricultural University launches Agri Portal Kiosk

Coimbatore: An Agri Portal Kiosk was launched at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) here on Thursday.

This kiosk would enable farmers get information on sowing, raising crops, harvest, post harvest management, new varieties and price indications in the regional language.

Inaugurating the kiosk, D K Bhatt, Marketing Director, Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO), said that at cooperative societies in various parts of the country, hundreds of such touch screens would be installed.

Speaking to journalists, he said that IFFCO`s annual turnover would be increased to Rs 15,000 core by 2010 thus benefiting the member cooperative societies and farmers in the country.

The biggest market for IFFCO was Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. UP accounted for 40 percent of the total market, he added.

Earlier, addressing the two day XIII IFFCO chair professors conference at TNAU, he said that the conference evaluated the progress made in regard to agricultural developments and would also draw future plans for extending benefits to the farmers.

Stating that the IFFCO had established 17 chairs in various state Agricultural Universities and National institutes in the country, he said that the professors on IFFCO chair, developed technologies benefiting the farmers and they would also strengthen the Research and Development activities in agriculture.

Bhatt said that as the food grains production was at present hovering around 210 million tones, there was a need to augment it in view of the for growing population.

"It is imperative that the farmers should be educated about the availability of quality seed, use of balanced nutrients, agro chemical, credit support, farm mechanization and minimizing post harvest loss so that they could get adequate returns", he emphasized.

The IFFCO`s Vision 2010 included installation of agronomic urea plants and acquisition of fertilizer units, generation of power, exploration of hydro carbons, value addition to agri products and marketing, manufacturing of petrol chemicals, financial services and information technology services, he said.

The IFFCO chair professors` conference would also discuss testing of urea formulations and application, weed control, nutrient management in cropping systems, site specific nutrient management, credit delivery system, Self-Help Groups involvement in agriculture and recovery of metals from ammonia plants.

The suggestions of the chair professors would be discussed under the guidance of resource persons to develop a pragmatic action plan for the next two years.
