TNAU launches website for research on climatic change

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), on Saturday, launched a new website: http://agmet.tnau.ac.in/climarice for research on ‘climate change’.

According to TNAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. C Ramasamy, the website has been created as part of the Clima Rice project. It will provide a link between the research team and the stakeholders like farmers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), self-help groups (SHGs), scientists, policy makers and officials of development department.

It will result in developing joint protocols to sustain rice production in the context of climate change. The website will also help the TNAU to exchange research outcome between the collaborating countries and institutions involved in climate change research. The ClimaRice project is jointly implemented by TNAU, Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and International Pacific Research Centre, University of Hawali, USA.

It mainly aims at assessing the climate variability and its impact on water availability and rice production system in the Cauvery river basin.

Prof V Geethalakshmi, coordinator of Clima Rice Project, says: “This website will enable the stakeholders to e-mail their queries relating to climate change. In a nutshell, it will host crop, weather and hydro-logical models.

The stakeholders can adopt them by feeding the inputs related to their agro basin and know the future water availability and impact of climate change on yield”.
