Training Programs for the Visually Impaired Persons

The Association for the Rights of the Visually Challenged (ARVIC), an organisation of persons with visual impairment in Coimbatore along with UDIS Forum, a network facilitating employment of persons with disabilities, will jointly organise training programmes for people with visual impairment in connection with Braille Day celebrated on January 4.

The programme will mainly target adults with visual impairment who had not had an opportunity for education. The ARVIC will identify those who require such training and the UDIS Forum will conduct special camps of three weeks duration to teach basic braille skills.

The UDIS Forum also offers a “Marga-Schulze” scholarship to encourage girls with visual impairment to pursue higher education. As per the terms of the scholarship, a student of the graduate level will receive a merit scholarship of Rs. 12,000 a year and the amount of scholarship for students pursuing Bachelors of Education Course (B.Ed.) and post-graduate level are Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 18,000.

Sixty-one visually impaired girls have been selected under this programme for the year 2007-2008. “Special efforts are underway to encourage more girls with visual impairment from all southern states to pursue higher education,” said Mr. M.N.G. Mani, president of UDIS Forum.
