Salem: The University Grants Commission (UGC) sanctioned a sum of Rs. 80 lakhs as second installment of grant under the 10th Five Year Plan to the Periyar University recently.
According to Vice-Chancellor of the university, T. Balakrishnan, the sum was granted based on the recommendation of an expert committee from the UGC, which visited the university recently to assess its requirements in June this year. The committee, headed by Member, UGC, K. Ramamurthy Naidu, visited the 12 departments of the university and assessed the requirements.
Building for students
The committee members also inspected the construction of buildings for students amenity centre and hostels on the university campus. The university had already received Rs. 1 crore as grant from the UGC for the construction of a building for the Periyar Institute of Management Studies.
According to senior university officials, the university needed funds primarily for the establishment of infrastructure facilities and to carry out research activities.
