V.O. Chidambaram College here proposes to offer a Master of Science course in Conservation of Marine Environment, under the University Grants Commission’s innovative programmes category, from next year.
Speaking to the press on 4th May, 2013, C. Veerabahu, Principal, said that the course was the first of its kind in the country. It will cover complex marine environmental issues. Students who have completed Marine Science, Zoology, Botany, Life sciences, Environmental Science, Microbiology and biotechnology at the undergraduate level would be eligible to apply for this course.
The UGC had sanctioned 60 lakh for the recurring and non – recurring expenditure of the course for a period of five years, in addition to three faculty positions. State – of – the art facilities such as SCUBA ( Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus ) diving equipment, seaworthy trawler, inverted microscope, digital microscope and a geo – informatics laboratory have been sanctioned by the UGC for the course. The emphasis would be on equipping students to face the future challenges in marine environmental conservation, Dr. Veerabahu said.
“Since the marine environment is fast deteriorating and facing severe threats, such as degradation of habitats and pollution, immediate attention is required to maintain the biodiversity,” he said. The students, who will be taught underwater monitoring techniques, could also be employed by the Forest Department which is involved in efforts to conserve the marine ecosystem, he added.
