West Bengal plans to Admit UG Students via Online 2013

The West Bengal Higher Education Department is planning to provide undergraduate students admissions through online from the current academic session to bring transparency in the admitting the students to the colleges in the State.

It has been a concern for the state government as admissions is one of the grey areas which have been constantly under criticism.

State Education minister, Bratya Basu said, ” The aim is to reduce malpractices. Though we had planned to introduce online system from last year, nor many colleges were ready with the infrastructure,”

Last year almost 150 colleges were said to start online admissions. But not too many could complete the procedure as proper infrastructure was not in place. The colleges had to depend on manual collection of forms.

It’s often pointed out that the colleges unions and students organizations take money fro backdoor admissions. Providing desired seats from the backdoor.

Principal of Astosh Collegs Dipak Kar said, “Last year, we had kept a few forms to be distributed from college counter, in case a student comes to college mistakenly. This year we will keep the provision of online admission, Even the merit list will be published on the college website,”

Another college Principal agreed that the online admissions to UG courses has reduced the threat from several students unions.

“Earlier, coming under pressure from the students bodies and unions, who were in control students from outside the merit list too found seats. Especially in the subjects where seats had remained vacant, senior students resorted to muscle flexing. It was also a way to earn money after assuring a seat to the students,” he said.

Basu also said, “We request all the colleges in state to start online admissions,”
