Eligibility for Alberta Government Training Scholarships 2017

Applicants for an Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Scholarship must be

  • A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • An Alberta resident as defined by Student Aid Alberta

To be eligible for an Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Scholarship in trades with more than one period of technical training, applicants must

  • Be registered as Alberta apprentices in trades
  • Have passed their first or subsequent period apprenticeship and industry training exams, and
  • Have at least one more period of technical training remaining in their programs

To be eligible for an Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Scholarship in trades with only one period of training, applicants must

  • Be registered as Alberta apprentices, and
  • Have passed their apprenticeship and industry training exams

Apprentices who are registered in trades with only two periods of technical training AND have completed both periods of training within one year are now eligible to apply for an Apprenticeship and Industry Training Scholarship (this removes the requirement for apprentices in these trades to have one period of technical training remaining). In this situation, cheques will be mailed to scholarship recipients when they have completed all requirements for their trade certificates.

Recipients must qualify for and claim their awards within five years of being notified of their awards.

Trades with two periods of technical training include:

  • Auto Body Refinisher
  • Auto Glass Technician
  • Commercial Appliance Service Technician
  • Concrete Finisher
  • Floorcovering Installer
  • Gasfitter (B)
  • Hairstylist
  • Ironworker – Metal Building Systems Erector
  • Ironworker – Reinforcing
  • Mobile Crane Operator
  • Tilesetter
  • Water Well Driller

To be considered for a scholarship, an Employer Recommendation form must be completed and attached to the application or mailed separately. Applicants must also include two or three paragraphs describing themselves, including what they enjoy about their trades, why they selected careers in the trades and how the scholarship will be of benefit.
