Dan Watkins was a leading figure in early weed science research in New Zealand. He was a founder of the New Zealand Weeds Conference (forerunner of the New Zealand Plant Protection Society), a member of the New Zealand National Research Council, and was involved with other scientific bodies.
This scholarship has been set up in memory of Dan Watkins and to recognise his contribution to weed science in New Zealand. The New Zealand Plant Protection Society administers this scholarship, which aims to encourage research into the biology and control of weeds in New Zealand.
Dan Watkins Scholarship applications from university students or students registered in other recognised New Zealand tertiary institutions will be considered.
The Dan Watkins Scholarship is a prestigious award made on a competitive basis, usually each year. In making awards, consideration will be given to the appropriateness and relevance of the proposed research, academic record of the applicant (s), and supporting statements from supervisors, peers or sponsors.
The monetary value of the Scholarship will usually be $ 5000. Recipients will be encouraged to become members of the Society and present a paper about their research to one of the Society’s conferences.
Applications should be made on the application form available below or from the secretary. The application should include a statement describing the proposed research and the applicant’s perceptions of the importance and relevance of the project, as well as a supporting statement from the applicant’s supervisor / mentor.
