Research Scholarship Description :

The University of Southampton’s School of Education is recognised as one of the UK’s leading centres for educational research.

The School is offering a doctoral scholarship to pursue study related to the understanding and integration of sustainability across the Higher Education curriculum.

The research will be jointly supervised by Dr Marcus Grace in the School of Education and Professor Debra Humphris, Pro Vice Chancellor, Education.

The focus of this project is to generate new knowledge about building education for sustainable development (ESD) into the HE curriculum, the factors influencing HE staff and student participation, and to develop interdisciplinary pedagogies which promote sustainability literacy among students.

The research will involve analysis of qualitative and quantitative data relating to teaching materials, the views and experiences of university staff and students, innovative approaches to teaching and learning, employer engagement, and methods of informal communication with the wider community.

One outcome will be to develop an evidence-based model for embedding ESD in the University of Southampton curriculum.

The successful student will have the opportunity to benefit from the School’s thriving research culture, and collaborate with researchers in other Faculties working on sustainability issues.

The University is offering a full-time PhD scholarship to a suitably qualified candidate. Candidates must have a relevant Masters degree. For Home / EU students, the award consists of payment of fees for a period of three years and a stipend of £14,000 per annum.
