Fulbright Scholarship Program 2017/2018 For Cyprus Students at Masters Level. The Traditional Fulbright Scholarship Program was established worldwide in 1946 and in Cyprus in 1962. The Fulbright Scholarship Program is a world renowned, merit-based scholarship program that aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.
The title of Fulbright Scholar carries tremendous prestige that continues to open doors for a lifetime. Fulbright scholars have been extraordinarily active and successful in the world: 39 have won Nobel prizes; 60 have won Pulitzer prizes; 22 have received MacArthur Foundation Genius Awards; 14 have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the U.S. highest honor.
The ranks of past Fulbright Scholars, internationally, include former United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the European Union High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, economist Milton Friedman, author John Updike and musician Aaron Copeland. In Cyprus, Cypriot alumni include leading personalities in the political, social, cultural, economic and scientific life of the island.
The Traditional Fulbright Scholarship Program in Cyprus is funded by the people of Cyprus and the United States through governmental contributions and in some cases, financial aid from American Institutions.
The Traditional Fulbright Scholarship Program, administered by the Fulbright Commission, is offering scholarships for Masters degrees in the United States.
The Cyprus Fulbright Commission will be accepting applications between early May and July 30, 2017. The Fulbright competition is open for Masters degrees in all fields except Medicine and Dentistry.
Grants are for study at accredited U.S. universities beginning in the 2017-2018 academic year.
Traditional Fulbright grants are primarily merit-based grants. An applicants financial need, although important for evaluation, is of secondary consideration in the selection process.
Fulbright Scholarship grantees will be awarded a maximum amount of $25,000 per year for two years if warranted by university studies (a maximum total of $50,000).
All scholarship grantees are expected to apply for financial assistance directly from the U.S. institutions, in addition to receiving the Fulbright scholarship.
Fulbright Scholarship Program Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible, applicants must fulfill all of the following requirements :
Cypriot citizenship : Applicants selected must have a Cypriot passport (they will have to travel to the U.S. with a Cypriot passport).
- Must not be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
- Have one parent who was born in Cyprus.
- Must have at least 3 years of secondary (lyceum) education in Cyprus.
Not be over 45 years of age on September 1, 2017.
