About the Vrije University :

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is at a turning point. But for us, the introduction of the Bachelor-Master structure, which has replaced the former system of ‘candidate’ and ‘licentiate’ degrees, is more than just a change of labels. We took a close look at all our courses and reformed the structure with a view to ensuring a broadening of knowledge, providing added value and enhancing study flexibility.

Entirely in the spirit of the Bologna Declaration, we chose to provide broad Bachelor courses that give access to as many Masters as possible, in different disciplines. This reorganisation also fits in perfectly with the philosophy and ideals of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel : flexible and modern education in small groups, with a wide range of choices, a smooth transition from secondary education and college to university, and optimal individual guidance and possibilities of self-study, supported by the most recent ICT facilities.

In due course, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel aims to abolish the concept of well-defined years of study and switch entirely to a more flexible system, expressed in credits. The existing strict year system offers students too little room for catching up. An important step towards greater flexibility has been the introduction of the semester system, which enables students to complete certain programme components in half a year. Dividing up a study path into semesters also has positive effects on mobility. It makes it much easier for students to spend a semester at a different European university. On their return, they start on a new set of subjects the next semester, so that they are on the same footing with fellow students who did not spend a semester abroad.

2) Preparatory Programs

A preparatory programme is meant for students in possession of an Academic Bachelors or Masters Degree who want to start a masters Programs but are not directly eligable based on their current degree. The preparatory programme allows these students to ‘catch up’ on the necessary knowledge needed to commence the programme with the same background as those in possession of the relevant academic bachelor. If the scope of the preparatory programme allows, it can be followed at the same time as the Masters Programme. Upon completion of a preparatory programme students receive a specific certificate, not a degree.
