St Stephens College

St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi was established in 1881, St. Stephen’s is the oldest college in Delhi. The college was first affiliated to Calcutta University, and later to University of Delhi. Finally with the establishment of Delhi University in 1922, St Stephens College became one of its three original constituent colleges. St Stephens College is a religious foundation drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It aims at helping its members realise spiritual and moral as well as intellectual and aesthetic values.

The College has a Chapel, which is open to all members of College for worship and meditation. Instruction from the life & teachings of Jesus Christ is given to first year Christian students. The College was established by a Christian mission from Westcott House, Cambridge. The Rev. Samuel Scott Allnutt was its Founder and first Principal. The anniversary of his death is observed as Founder’s Day on 7 December every year.

The College began with just five student and three teachers in a small house in Katra Khushal Rai, near Kinari Bazar in Chandni Chowk. From 1891 to 1941 it was housed in the building now hosted by Delhi College of Engineering, near St. James Church inside Kashmere Gate. In 1941 it shifted to its present site in the university Enclave. The present buildings of the College, with the exception of a few later additions, were designed by the distinguished architect Walter George.

St Stephens College Courses Offered

1. Bachelor of Arts in Economics ( Hons. )

  • Category : Economics
  • Degree : BA Honours
  • Mode : Full Time
  • Medium : Campus

Economics in St Stephens College is a much sought after course, and competition to get admission to it is intense. Economics Honours in the University of Delhi is, without any exaggeration, the finest undergraduate course in the discipline that this country offers, especially after recent changes have improved its structure and significantly increased the levels of academic sophistication and difficulty ( the 2008 batch was the first to complete the new course ). It is technically demanding and requires strong mathematical and “quantitative” skills. Students who want to apply to Economics Honours should have been very comfortable with Class XII mathematics and should be familiar with logical reasoning starting from clearly stated assumptions. A Class XII background in the sciences is in fact very good preparatory training; and, on the other hand, there is no need to have done Economics at Class XII provided the student has the basic mathematical skills and ability to reason logically ( the Honours course is entirely self contained ).

2. Bachelor of Arts in English ( Hons. )

  • Category : English
  • Degree : BA Honours
  • Mode : Full Time
  • Medium : Campus

The course descriptions given below cover all courses offered by the Department of English across the undergraduate curriculum. They are to be read in tandem with: [ i ] The English Department account in the College Prospectus; and [ ii ] The University of Delhi syllabi pertinent to the courses described. The aim is to convey a strong sense of how the English Department at St Stephens College actually imparts instruction in the courses leading to an undergraduate degree, and the challenges to be faced over this three year period.

Requirements and snap delineations of courses specifically for English Honours students are listed as an asterisked item on the last page. Unlike most other departments, MA English students have to take mandatory tutorials in College in addition to classes at the Arts Faculty. These are arranged under the supervision of the Head of Department.

3. Bachelor of Arts in History ( Hons. )

  • Category : History
  • Degree : BA Honours
  • Mode : Full Time
  • Medium : Campus

The three year Honours course in History is a demanding one but those who are genuinely fond of the subject will find it useful and enjoyable. The course provides detailed study of Indian history as well as substantial surveys of the histories of other countries. In the first year students study ancient India as well as the evolution of ancient civilizations and the medieval world. In the second year, there are two compulsory courses on medieval India and Europe and an option of studying the history of the USA or the USSR. Final year students have to do two Indian history and two non – Indian history courses : Mughal and Modern Indian history and the history of Modern Europe and of China and Japan. All these papers are of hundred marks each ( eight compulsory and one to be chosen from the second-year options ). There are also two fifty mark concurrent papers in the first and second years the details of which can be found in the syllabus.

4. Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy ( Hons. )

  • Category : Philosophy
  • Degree : BA Honours
  • Mode : Full Time
  • Medium : Campus

Philosophy is one of the smaller departments at St Stephens. Rather than the traditional lecture classes are organized more along the lines of interactive group discussions. We have currently widened our base to offer an exciting range of concurrent courses. We seek to maintain a friendly and somewhat informal classroom atmosphere. The first year introduces you to the elements of formal reasoning, an essential tool to help you to decipher and unravel some of the complex arguments that you will have to analyse over the next three years. You also study important philosophical strands in classical Indian philosophy, including the ‘Vedic’ and the ‘non – Vedic’ schools. The second year invites you to think along with some western philosophers, including Socrates, Plato and Aristotle and, with a leap through the centuries, Descartes, Leibnitz, Berkeley, Hume and Kant. The third year offers you a wide range of elective subjects from the philosophy of language to philosophy of religion. The two compulsory papers here are on ethics and two major texts of Indian philosophy.

5. Bachelor of Arts in Sanskrit ( Hons. )

  • Category : Sanskrit
  • Degree : BA Honours
  • Mode : Full Time
  • Medium : Campus

The three year Honours programme in Sanskrit is both interesting and challenging. It seeks to introduce various genres of Sanskrit literature from the early Vaidika to classical prose, poetry and drama to modern writing in Sanskrit. Traditional disciplines like Vyakarana ( Paninian grammar ), Darshana ( at least two schools Advaita : Vedanta ad Nyaya – Vaishishika ) and Kavya – shastra ( poetics ) also form a part of the curriculum. In the third year, College offers a course in theoretical archaeology and epigraphy.

The main strength of the programme is that it offers multiple opportunities to persons interested in Indian history, society and culture, philosophy, language studies and literature and allows them to get first hand information through original sources.

6. Bachelor of Arts

  • Category : General
  • Degree : BA
  • Mode : Full Time
  • Medium : Campus

The raison of the BA Program is the need for an undergraduate program that is relevant to the immediate environment of social opportunities while, at the same time, giving the student the basic intellectual equipment expected of a program of higher education.

It is a useful and attractive academic program that enables a student to acquire the thinking ability, linguistic skills and broad – based knowledge needed to enter the world of work. At the same time, this program gives the students enough knowledge in a discipline to pursue post – graduate studies. The BA. Program is thus conceived both as a terminal degree with substantial intellectual prowess and as an enabling degree for higher studies.

The structure and contents of the program make it an integrated and inter disciplinary program with flexibility and choice. Thus the BA. Program is bound to provide the students a demanding but worthwhile and enjoyable experience in the form of a liberal education.
