Loyola College of Social Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram is a premier institute of social sciences founded by the Society of Jesus ( Jesuits ) in 1963, the College offers courses in MA ( Sociology ), MSW ( Masters in Social Work ) and MAPM ( Masters in Personnel Management ). The College is affiliated to the University of Kerala and is a recognized research center of the University. The Centre prepares students for PhD  in Social Sciences and takes up sponsored research projects. A full – fledged Extension Services, Loyola Extension Services ( LES ), is unique feature of the College.

The LES acts as the Social Lab of the College. True to the Jesuit tradition of MAGIS ( Excellence ) and the commitment to Faith and Justice, Loyola strives to reach the benefits of higher education to the people, especially the marginalized. In reaching this goal, they are guided by the Ignatian vision of life and its application in Jesuit Education.

The two year Post Graduate course emphasises on core papers both theoretical and electives that are applied subjects in the realm of Sociology. Training in Research Methods, Statistics and Computer Education also form part of the course. In addition to the syllabus, training in soft skills and practice of sociology are given through the Loyola Extension Centre which facilitates community development and leadership training programs.

The faculty consist of five members who have graduated from various Indian Universities and have international exposure. The areas specialised by them are Education, Local Governance, Gender, Rural Development, Globalisation, Ageing, Tribal and Minority studies.

3. Master of Social Work

Established in 1964, the Department of Social Work was the first professional department under the University of Kerala to offer a Masters Degree in Social Work. The object of the department is to impart training to the graduates in order to become professionals in the diverse fields of social work. The department initially had Personnel Management as the sole specialization. In 1975 Medical Psychiatric Social Work specialization was introduced. In the year 2000 the ‘Personnel Management’ specialization was bifurcated from the MSW course and Community Development was added as another specialization.

With a long tradition of professional education and action research culture our students get placement as soon as they complete the course.
