TV Production
From just 10 channels available in 1993 to 220 channels by the end of 2003, the Indian television industry has shown a tremendous growth in the last decade. Today, the choices available to viewers are varied and immense, ranging from soap operas to news, from sports to business. In a nutshell, it can be aptly put that almost every viewer today can have his/her own cake of entertainment as well as desired bits of information on TV. It's all a matter of just turning on the TV set to watch one's favourite programme. Given the continuous increase in the number of viewers, the competition has, no doubt, grown by leaps and bounds so much so that you have specialised channels catering to the needs of a particular section of the society or particular State. This has created vast opportunities for the trained people. With increasing production costs, there is more stress on cutting costs manpower within a minimum scale. And, this is only possible with the entry of people trained in various aspects of production into the arena of TV production.
A producer is a person who organises and coordinates different activities of technicians, cameramen, script writers, sound recordists, music directors, costume designers and others. The producer has to arrange the finances and take care of the marketing aspects as well. In short, producer is the person who make a film or serial (fiction & non-fiction) happen
The area of TV production is considered to be a rather new industry, still, there are many reputed institutions in the country that provide courses in the speed. These courses are offered in two ways - as a specialised course and as a part of the mainline curriculum of mass communication. Forexample the Film and Television Institute in Pune (Maharasthra). Offers a three year diploma course in Film and Television (total course fee: Rs 60,000) or a one year Certificate course in Television (fee: 50,000). The former is a comprehensive course which helps students in learning basic concepts and skills required for making films and television programmes: direction, cinematography, audio and editing, etc. It also trains the students in working as a member of the production team as well as managing creative team. Each student has to make five - minit project (fiction/ non-fiction )using digital video as medium, at the completion of the first year. In case of the second programme, the students are introduced to basic concepts in TV direction, electronic cinematography, a sound and editing. The students also familiarise themselves with single camera and the multi-camera production techniques. Workshops and co-ordinated exercises are conducted to familiarise students with production techniques of various programme formats. At the end of the programme, the student have to produce project using single and multi camera systems, with their acquired knowledge during the course.
Similarly, AJK Mass Communication Research Center (MCRC), Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi, offers a two- year MA Degree programme (Fee: Rs.62,000) but at Indraprastha College (Delhi University), TV production is an integral part of the Bachelor Mass Media and Communication module (Fee: 12,500). The Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Delhi, has recently included a module on TV production in their Post Graduation Diploma Course in Radio and TV Journalism. In addition, there are few private institutes, which offer short- term programmes in TV production. In a nutshell a curriculum in TV production consists of history and film appreciation, production techniques of film and video, sound design, video editing, production and direction, etc. The programmes generally conduct seminars, specialised worksshops, film screenings, multi-media presentations, hands-on training, supervised practical exercises and field trips to make them interactive.
Admission to these reputed institutes is difficult because even though the number of applicats is increasing every year, the member of vaccant seats at these institutions has remained the same. A touch written test is generally followed by a gruelling interview. This is doone to ascertain whether the candidate has the apptitude to become an integellient and thinking media person. A lot of importance is given to students knowledge about the world and the society he lives in. She/he should have a well argued pointof-view rather than just a set of opinions.
Keeping in mind the regular advances in technology, the course contents are revised from time to time to maintain its relevancy. In today's world no institute can survive in this field without making the upgradation. So, MCRC has made a transition from analogue to digital. FTII has introduced some of the lastest equipments like Harrison Audio Mixer, Arri 535 Camera, Joker Lights, etc.
As TV production is a synthesis of many roles, you have various career options available to you like direction, editing, cinematography and so on. Qualified students get picke up directly from the campus by the media and production houses. Depending on the work profile and the company, the starting salary varies from Rs.5,000 to Rs. 20,000 per month.
Entertainment industry is much more than the glamour aspect it project. The world of small screen is no different from any industry. There is competition and you have to put in a lot of creative hard work to survive here. So, if the small fascinates you as a technical person, then a career as a TV producer should prove to be a satisfying option.
