The Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai was established in the year 1961, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India. The Administrative control of this Institute was transferred to ICAR in 1979. Subsequently, the scope and mandate have been widened to include education, research and extension. Recognizing the pivotal role played by the Institute in Human Resources Development in fisheries, the CIFE Institute was accorded the status of Deemed – to – be – University in March, 1989.

There are six major functional divisions at CIFE equipped with state of the art laboratories and various sections / cells to carry out specific work. The Institute has two campuses one at Yari road and another at Seven Bungalows, Mumbai. The new Yari road campus ( three floors and basement ) houses scientific divisions, chambers of the Director and Joint Director, Academic and Accounts sections, Conference hall, Community hall, Aquarium, Examination and Academic cells, Library building, Staff quarters and Ladies hostel etc. Wet labs, ponds and hatcheries are also developed in Yari road campus.

The Central Institute of Fisheries Education old campus at Seven Bungalows houses three divisions, laboratories, classrooms, computer cell, committee room, auditorium, workshop and museum. These two campuses are a kilometer apart from each other at Versova. The CIFE Institute with its headquarters at Mumbai has four centres at Kolkata ( West Bengal ), Kakinada ( Andhra Pradesh ), Powerkheda ( Madhya Pradesh ) and Rohtak ( Haryana ) near Delhi. The Central Institute of Fisheries Education’s field facilities include 20 ha Freshwater Fish Farm at Powerkheda ( Madhya Pradesh ); 9.0 ha Freshwater Fish Farm at Balabhadrapuram ( Andhra Pradesh ); 7.5 ha Brackishwater Fish Farm at Kakinada ( Andhra Pradesh ), 4 ha Freshwater Fish Farm and 10 ha Ground Saline Water Farm at Rohtak for training and research in aquaculture. The Institute has two training – cum – research vessels viz.: M.F.V. Saraswati ( 36 m OAL ) and M.F.V. Narmada ( 11 m OAL ) for training and research in marine fisheries. The total sanctioned strength of the Institute as on 31 March, 2009 is 356 comprising of 2 Research Management, 104 Scientific, 113 Technical, 57 Administrative, 1 Auxialiary and 79 Supporting staff.

The CIFE has been accredited by ICAR for five years from September, 2007 to August, 2012. CIFE offers Master of Fishery Science programs in nine disciplines viz. Fisheries Resources Management, Aquaculture, Post – harvest Technology, Fish Nutrition and Biochemistry, Fish Pathology and Microbiology, Fish Genetics and Biotechnology, Fish Business Management, Aquatic Environment Management and Fisheries Extension, while the doctoral programs are offered in the ten disciplines viz. Fisheries Resources Management, Aquaculture, Post – harvest Technology, Fish Genetics, Fish Biotechnology, Fish Nutrition and Biochemistry, Fish Pathology and Microbiology, Fish Business Management, Aquatic Environment Management and Fisheries Extension.

A two – year post graduate ( PG ) Diploma in Fisheries Science, which the Institute used to conduct since its inception, mainly for in service personnel of State Fisheries Departments, was discontinued from the academic year 1998. This course was solely responsible for providing the trained manpower for fisheries development in the country till fisheries colleges under State Agriculture Universities ( SAUs ) came into the picture during the Seventies.

The CIFE Institute at its Kolkata Centre has been conducting one year PG diploma in Inland Fisheries ( PGDIF ). This PGDIF is being discontinued from 2009 onwards. In its place Professional Development Program ( PDP ) comprising different modules are being introduced from 2009. PDPs offer options for obtaining Diploma in Fisheries Enterprise Management or Diploma in Fisheries Development Management and also as many as certificate courses of four months duration each. The Diploma in Fisheries Enterprise Management would consist of the following modules.

Central Institute of Fisheries Education Selection Procedure

Selection for M.F.Sc Program :

A combined examination for the award of ICAR Junior Research Fellowship and admissions to 100% seats of Master’s Degree Program at the CIFE is conducted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Krishi Anusandhan Bhavan, Pusa, New Delhi, in the 1st week of June.

The subject – wise syllabi for the combined examination is given in the Information Bulletin. The application form and Information Bulletin can be obtained by post from Assistant Director General ( EPD ), ICAR, Krishi Anusandhan Bhavan, Pusa, New Delhi – 110 012.

Candidates will be selected for the award of ICAR Junior Research Fellowship and admission to State Agricultural Universities and Deemed Universities on the basis of merit in the Entrance Examination and counseling.

Selection for Ph.D. Course :

Admissions are made on the basis of a written test and interview for Ph.D. The academic score will have a weightage of 20 % for academics, 70% for subject matter written test and 10% for interview. However, the minimum qualifying marks in the written test for Ph.D. for the General English and General Knowledge and subject matter paper is 35 % and 50 % respectively for general category. For SC/ST candidates, the minimum marks are 30 and 45 % respectively.

The written test will consist of the following papers :

Subject matter – 200 marks

Reservation for SC / ST / OBC candidates is applicable as per the relevant rules.

There will not be a specific syllabus for the General English and General Knowledge papers. Prescribed syllabus for the subject matter is provided in the Information Bulletin.

Procedure for Central Institute of Fisheries Education application :

  1. Prescribed CIFE Application Form and Information Bulletin/ Prospectus for the Entrance Test and Admission of Ph.D programs can be obtained from the following address :

    Request for Information Bulletin and CIFE Application Form may be made at the CIFE office through post well in advance.
  2. The Information Bulletin bears a serial number at the top right corner. This number, the course and the discipline to which the admission is sought, must be quoted in all correspondence.
  3. The Information Bulletin contains the following enclosures :
    • Two Computerized Central Institute of Fisheries Education application forms which have to be filled very carefully and neatly, as per the instructions. These forms have a number printed on it as application number. The applicant is required to check whether this number is same in both the forms as well as on Provisional Admit Card, Acknowledgement Card and the Information Bulletin.
    • Provisional Admit Card
    • Specimen Copy of Answer Sheet
    • Acknowledgement Card
    • One envelope for mailing the application
  4. A candidate can apply for admission to only one major subject group and give preference of subjects within the group.
  5. The Central Institute of Fisheries Education application forms along with the Provisional Admit Card and Acknowledgement Card (affixed with postal stamps of the amount indicated therein and filled legibly and correctly by the applicant) should be forwarded with necessary sets of attested copies of the documents, viz., High School Certificates as a proof of date of birth, marksheet of Degree Examination passed and SC / ST certificate ( if applicable ) so as to reach the following address on or before the last date notified.

  6. The last date for receipt of completed CIFE application form from the candidates residing in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Ladakh Division of J & K State, Lahaul & Spiti Districts and Pangi Sub – division of Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshwadeep ( complete in all respects ) will be notified each year. Central Institute of Fisheries Education Applications received after the last date shall not be entertained.
  7. Candidates who are in employment must submit their CIFE application through proper channel along with the declaration form ( specimen enclosed ) duly filled in by the employer.
  8. If a candidate furnishes wrong information or suppresses any relevant information, his/her admission will be cancelled.
