Established as Imperial Forest Research Institute in 1906, Forest Research Institute ( FRI ) Dehradun is a premier institution under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education ( ICFRE ). Set in the sylvan surroundings of Doon Valley, the Forest Research Institute is a proud testimony to the foresight and vision of foresters and administrators of long ago.

FRI institute also has the status of University and at present offers three courses leading to M.Sc. Degree and two Post – Graduate Diploma Courses, besides awarding Ph.D. degree in Forestry.

Forestry Research Institute ( FRI ) has been implementing programs aimed at holistic development of forestry research, education and extension for sustainable management and development of forestry resources in the country.
I hope that this website will give new useful information to our forestry sector organizations, other partners, stakeholders, and people at large. Past year has been demanding and exciting unfolding a number of new developments. FRI Institute has been actively involved in the deliberations of the climate change as an observer of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ( UNFCCC ).
It also participated in meetings of Conference of the Parties ( COP ) and Subsidiary Bodies in Nairobi and Bali. FRI Institute also established a platform for networking with partners on Forest Invasive Species. We in pursuance of the Council’s regular plan programme, approved research projects to cater to the needs of various target groups.
Technologies and protocols developed in fields of cilviculture, agroforesty, biotechnology, tree improvement, wood technology, forest products, and environmental management practices by the Council were extended to user agencies through short and long term courses, workshops, trainings, and awareness programs.
Countrywide improvement in forestry education is promoted by providing financial support to various universities imparting forestry education with a view to strengthening their infrastructure, and to augment teaching and research capabilities. Much emphasis is given on the quality of forestry education and placement of forestry students of FRI University.

Ph.D. Programs :
A student can pursue research at FRI University or any of recognized research centers of FRI or ICFRE spread all over the country, leading to an award of Ph.D. degree. The research facilities in the field of forestry and allied subjects at the FRI University are amongst the best in the country. At present over 443 research scholars are registered for Ph.D. at the FRI University. Till now 303 Ph.D. degrees have been awarded.
FRI Dehradun University Eligibility Criteria :
- Hold a master’s degree or its equivalent from any recognized university or Institute.
- Have 55% marks or above in Post graduate examination.
- Have the supervisor/guide from FRI or its research centers and Co – guide may be from outside.
- A student can apply for his PhD either in March or September in a calendar year.
FRI Dehradun Admission Procedure :
The notification for entrance test is published in the selected leading newspapers including the Employment News in the month of January and the test is held in the month of May. Candidates are selected in order of merit on the basis of multiple choice objective type written test held at No. of centres. 15% and 7.5% of the seats are reserved for SC & ST candidates respectively, who fulfill the minimum admission requirements. For National FRI :
Reservation to the extent of 15% of the prescribed seats on supernumerary basis for Foreign Nationals is made for admission to each of the M.Sc. course available in the Institute provided they have passed the B.Sc. or equivalent qualifying examination from a University outside India and also fulfill the following conditions: ( a ) that the applications are routed through Indian Council for Cultural Relations / Ministry of Human Resource & Development ( Department of Education ), Government of India, New Delhi.
