Career in Petroleum Engineering : : Petroleum Engineering Prospects
Industries, cars and households would come to a standstill and life would once again become as it was it the Stone Age, if there would be no petroleum.
It is the magic substance that drives the engine of the modern civilization. Factories, automobiles and even our household cooking are all dependent on petroleum.
But unbridled exploitation of petroleum has dried out easy – to – locate oilfields. The new search for petroleum is in complex geological locations.
Professionally trained Petroleum Engineers are in huge demand to meet this challenge. If you are a person who enjoys living on the edge, you should go in for a course in Petroleum Engineering.
As a Petroleum Engineer, you will use both your brain and brawn to work and help in the exploitation of ‘liquid gold’, thereby carving out a golden career for you.
Engineering is the Art and Science of making practical application of the knowledge of pure sciences, like Physics or Chemistry, as in the construction of engines, bridges, buildings, mines, ships chemical plants, etc.
Petroleum Engineering is the discipline in which the principles of Geology, Physics and Engineering are applied for the recovery, development and processing of petroleum.
The discovery and production of oil and gas; their refinement and transportation; and the retail sectors if the oil and gas industry – these are the areas in which Petroleum Engineers specialize.
They are involved in the exploration and production of oil and natural gas and also in each stage of oil field evaluation, development and production.
Petroleum Engineering covers a wide range of activities like the discovery of natural sources, examination of the natural characteristics and the development of modern machinery for the extraction and processing of petroleum.
The petroleum industry is broadly divided into two major sectors – the upstream sector and the downstream sector. Work in the upstream sector.
Work in the upstream sector consists of the exploration, production and exploitation of oil and natural gas.
The downstream sector comprises the refining, marketing and distributing functions. Petroleum Engineers function within the upstream sector.
A Petroleum Engineer usually works in a team comprising professionals drawn from different disciplines.
A Petroleum Engineer has to work with geophysicists, geologists, well log, analysts, safety, engineers environmental / regulatory specialists etc.
The value of petroleum is great for any country. It finds application in plastics, paints, polymers, Soaps and the most important of all, medicines.
It is used as fuel in the transportation sector comprising automobiles, ships and aeroplanes. Petroleum is also used for cooking food, when it is used LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or kerosene.
The different components of Petroleum are Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene, LPG, Gasoline, Pitch or Bitumen, Bunker Oil, Aviation Turbine Fuel, Asphalt, CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), Mineral Oil, Petroleum Jelly and Lubricants.
These components find application in various industries and hence the importance of petroleum for the National Economy.
Petroleum Engineering Eligibility :
Successful completion of the 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects, is the minimum eligibility criteria required to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering.
One should have completed B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) or B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) in Chemical or Petroleum Engineering in order to pursue an M.Tech (Master of Technology) Degree in Petroleum Engineering.
One who has completed an M.Sc. Degree in Chemistry in also eligible to pursue a M.Tech Degree in Petroleum Engineering.
The Dibrugarh University in Assam offers two types of M.Tech Programs in Petroleum Engineering. The eligibility criteria for the programs differ from one another.
The minimum eligibility criteria required to pursue an M.Tech. (Petroleum Exploration and Production Program at Dibrugarh University is an engineering degree in Mechanical or Petroleum Science.
An M.Sc. degree in Geology or Geophysics, with a minimum of 55 percent marks, also makes one eligible to pursue this M.Tech Course.
Similarly, in order to pursue and M.Tech. (Petroleum Refining and Petrochemicals) Program at the same university, one should be a B.E. or B.Tech in Chemical / Petrochemicals Engineering or an M.Sc. in Organic / Physical Chemistry with a minimum of 55 percent marks.
