Research options after MBBS

There are Plenty of Opportunities for Medical Research for Doctors who have completed their MBBS Course. There are two broad research options for a Medical Graduate. One option is to get admission to a 3 Year Medical Postgraduate Program ( MD or MS ) and thereafter enrol for Ph.D. The second option is to secure admission in one of the few Research Universities that admit meritorious Medical Graduates directly into their Research Programs.

Direct Admission :

A few institutions provide direct admission to Meritorious Medical Graduates to Research Programs leading to Ph.D. The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences ( NIM – HANS ), Bangalore – 560 029, is one of the prominent institutions that offer this facility.

The Institute offers Ph.D. along with fellowships in the following disciplines :

Doctorate Degree in Neurophysiology :

The course duration is 3 – 5 Years and the institute offer fellowships too.


Eligibility : MBBS / M.Phil. in Neurosciences, Neurophysiology, MD in Physiology, MD in Ayurveda, BE or B.Tech. in Electronics, Electrical, Computer Science, Biotechnology, M.Sc. Degree in Physiology, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Neurosciences, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Zoology or Master’s degree in Physciotheraphy.

Doctorate Degree in Clinical Neurosciences :

The course duration is 3 – 5 Years and the institute offers fellowships.

Eligibility : Medical graduates with a minimum of 55 per cent marks.

The applicants must have completed 1 Year compulsory internship or its equivalent or should have registered with the State Medical Council. Those with postgraduate medical qualifications can also apply.

  • Ph.D. in Nuero Microbiology : MBBS degree / MD in Microbiology or BE in Biotechnology, M.Phil, in Neurosciences, M.Sc. degree in Medical Microbiology, Molecular Biology, MLT, Applied Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Genetics, Neuroscience.
  • Ph.D. in Neurovirology : MBBS / MD in Microbiology / M.Sc. degree in Medical Microbiology, Microbiology, Biotechnology or Virology.
  • Ph.D. in Psychiatry : MBBS degree.
  • Ph.D in Psychopharmacology : MBBS / MD in Pharmacology, Physiology, Biochemistry or a BE in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, M.Sc. in Pharmacology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics.
  • DM in Neurology : MBBS, MD, DNB in General Medicine or Pediatrics.
  • M.Ch. in Neurosurgery : MBBS, MS, DNB in General Surgery.

The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, offers M.Ch. in Neurosurgery ( after MBBS ) Program. Entry qualification is MBBS with 1 Year Post Registration Senior Residency / House Surgency in General Surgery from a recognised University / PG Institute / Teaching, Hospital.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi, provides excellent research facilities leading to Ph.D. for MBBS degree holders with not less than 55 per cent aggregate marks. Ph.D. study facilities are available in the Departments including Medicine, Neurology, Neuro Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Microbiology, Medical Oncology and Physiology. After PG Courses :

In India, an MD or MS is a Postgraduate Degree awarded to MBBS holders after 3 Years of study. The research element is not prominent here, as these courses are meant to provide Clinical Qualification in Surgery, Orthopedics and Gynaecology, the Equivalent degree is Master of Surgery ( MS ).

DNB Qualification ( Diploma of the National Board ) is considered equivalent to MD and MS. DNB can be obtained by clearing the centralised entrance test after completing 3 Years Postgraduate Training in Hospitals recognized by the National Board, New Delhi ( ).

After obtaining the Postgraduate Degree ( MD, MS, DNB ) one can go for future specialisation in medical or surgical fields. This requires 3 Years of Training and Study and then passing an examination both theory and practical. The degree awarded is DM ( Doctorate in Medicine ). For Surgical Super specialties, the degree awarded is M.Ch. the DM or M.Ch. degrees are equivalent to fellowship training in the U.S. and are considered postdoctoral degrees in India similar to Ph.D.

After MBBS, one can opt for Medical Postgraduate Studies ( MD or MS ) through an Entrance Test. At the Postgraduate Level, aspirants can specialise in Medicine and Surgery. PG Programs ( MD / MS ) are usually of 3 Year duration. The major specialisations include General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Psychiatry and Anesthesiology.

Those with Postgraduate Degrees ( MD / MS ) can further go for Ph.D. Program in any specialised area of medicine. MD or MS degree holders can complete the Doctoral Program in 2 Years. Postgraduates in medicine with 60 per cent marks are eligible to apply for Ph.D. Selection will be on the basis of an entrance test and interview. Those who hold UGC CSIR or ICMR fellowship can directly appear for interview.

Prominent institutions such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences ( AIIMS ), New Delhi, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, Jawaharlal Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education and Research ( JIPMER ), Puducherry, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh and Christian Medical College Vellore, provide research facilities leading to Ph.D. Those who have an MBBS degree, 1 Year internship and a medical council registration are eligible for admission to MD, MS Program. For DNB, one should have passed primary examinations of the National Board also.

Duration of these courses is 3 Years. Eligibility for DM and M.Ch. Programs is MBBS degree, 1 Year internship and medical council registration.

For M.Ch. ( Neuro ) eligibility is MBBS degree, 1 Year internship, medical council registration and MD or MS. Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, offers DM or M.Ch. ( 3 Year ) courses.

For DM subjects available are Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, Neuroaneshtasia, Cardiology, Neurology, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.

For M.Ch. subjects available are Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery ( after MS ). Ph.D. Programs can also be pursued at the Institute.

Research and Training :

Research on new methods of treatment, drugs and their effects are mostly done in research establishments and drug firms. Doctors often combine clinical and scientific work but there are research vacancies too for those interested. Some leading hospitals involved in research provide facilities in clinical research with fellowships in association with foreign universities.

Medical graduates are eligible to, participate in clinical research. Dr. B.R Ambedkar Centre for Biomedical Research offers M.Sc., Ph.D. combined degree in biomedical sciences. This is a 4 Year Full Time Course. Those who have obtained MBBS degree with 55 per cent marks are also eligible for admission.
