Career in Robotic Surgery

Today, healthcare and engineering are working hand – in – hand in several ways. The outcomes of this alliance are sophisticated diagnostic equipment, medical instruments and treatment procedures. With the advent of every such groundbreaking innovation the healthcare industry is moving towards ideal procedures. One such innovation is robotic surgery, which uses robots to perform critical surgeries.

Robotic surgery deals with performing a surgery using robotic devices. With the advent of these devices, traditional invasive surgeries with large incisions are being replaced by minimally invasive surgeries. These procedures are performed using miniaturised surgical instruments through tiny ports or keyholes in the human body. Among such surgical instruments, surgical robots are noteworthy.

‘Da Vinci’, is the most popular robot used for performing surgeries. It was developed by Intuitive Surgical, USA. It is believed to be the most advanced tele – surgical system in the world. The instrument has four arms. One of the arms is equipped with a high – definition camera, which transmits true three dimensional magnification images to the surgeon’s console. The other three arms are mounted with tiny proprietary instruments.

The arms of the robot are equipped with sensors that pick up the surgeon’s hand movements and replicate them at the actual surgical site. The system is also featured with advanced options to scale down the movements and filter tremors. It is like the surgeon’s hand being inside the patient while the reality is that he is operating in virtual reality by observing the detailed images on the screen.

Robotic surgery can increase the success rates of complicated surgical procedures. They minimise invasion and incision, which enhance patient experience as well. With robotic devises, surgeons have better control over medical instruments. They provide access to hard-to-reach places without causing damage to area surrounding the target spot.

This reduces tissue trauma less than what can ever be achieved by human hands. Small incisions mean less blood loss, less pain, faster healing and shorter stay at hospital. The devices come with maximum range of motion and accuracy due to which surgeries are safer and precise.

Myths in Robotic Surgery Career

Some people panic by the idea of robots performing the operations. However, the fact is, the actual surgery is performed by the surgeon. He controls the movements of the robot using a remote manipulator or computer control.

Skills of Using the Robots in Surgery

Robotic surgery is not a separate speciality in medical sciences. It is an advanced technique, which surgeons can apply to deliver better results in their work. It can be employed in a wide range of specialities like cardiac, gastrointestinal, thoracic, neurology, urology, gynaecology, prostrate cancer and general surgeries.

With medical science fast integrating with technology, and the world embracing the latest techniques promptly, surgeons too should focus on enhancing their skills to stay ahead in their career. After all, computer-enhanced, fine-tuned surgical skills will definitely give you an edge over others.

Robotic Surgery Career Skills

Learning to perform surgeries using robotic devices calls for intensive learning. As it is with any other activity, practice makes surgeons perfect at using the device. Before performing the actual surgery with the robot, doctors are trained to use the device in virtual world, using simulators.

During the training, they need to understand the working of robotic systems. They need to interpret the images and feedback communicated by the device and provide inputs for its course of action. Initially, you may take twice as long as traditional surgery to complete a robotic surgery.

Gaining mastery over robotic surgery often demands 10 – 15 actual experiences. Before being trained in robotic surgery, doctors should gain mastery in traditional operating procedures. Therefore, it goes without saying that Masters in Surgery is the minimum eligibility criteria to opt for this training.

A decent idea about how computational devices work, enthusiasm to learn about the latest devices in medical equipment market, keen interest on updating knowledge about developments in the medical world, intense desire to be at the forefront of change are the attitudes that will keep the aspirants going.

In India, robotic surgery is in its nascent stage. There are only a few medical robots and fewer surgeons, who can perform surgeries using them. The primary reason behind this is lack, of mentorship in the specialised area. Aspiring surgeons often get themselves trained in USA or UK. Fortunately, these days, some of the top hospitals and medical institutions are inviting robotics surgery experts from different countries to train Indian surgeons.

On the other hand, patients opting for robotic surgery are not many owing to the fact that it is a costly option compared to traditional surgery. Lack of awareness about the benefits of robotic surgery and doubts about its efficiency are some reasons why patients hesitate to opt for it.

Robotic Surgery Specialization in India

However, with the awareness about the technique increasing, and more importantly, medical tourism picking up in India, more and more hospitals are moving towards adopting it.

  1. AIIMS, New Delhi.
  2. Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, New Delhi.
  3. Vattikuti Institute of Robotic Surgery, ( Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Gurgaon )
  4. Fortis Hospital, New Delhi.

These are among the pioneers to perform robotic surgeries in India.

Career prospects of robotic surgeons are challenging and exciting. Salary package of robotic surgeons is very high. Robotic surgery is poised to become a standard of care in several surgical procedures. Surgeons performing traditional surgeries can get trained in this technique. It will surely make a huge difference to their career.
