Cellular Organization

Development, gametogenesis, cell determination and differentiation : morphogenetic gradients; stem cells; transgenics; establishment of symmetry in plants Photoperiodism; Haematopoiesis and haemostasis. Endocrine glands: Structure and function.

Molecular Biology and Genetics

Central dogma, Structure of DNA and RNA, Basic techniques of molecular Biology, DNA replication, transcription, translation, post – translational modifications, gene structure in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, gene regulation, mutations and their role in evolution. Gene interactions, linkage, gene mapping methods, speciation, population genetics, genetic disorders

Recombinant DNA Technology

Vectors: plasmid, cosmids, bacteriophage and other viral vectors; Restriction and modification enzymes; Ti plasmid, yeast artificial chromosome; cDNA and genomic DNA library; Gene cloning and expression; Transposons and gene targeting; DNA sequencing; Polymerase chain reactions; DNA fingerprinting; Gene therapy.
