Gurgaon Rapid MetroRail to begin in April

Phase – I of the Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon Limited ( RMGL ), a network of 5.1 km connecting Cyber City, National Highway – 8 and Sikanderpur Metro station, is expected to become operational in April despite slowdown of work due to extreme cold, said RMGL managing director Sanjiv Rai here on Thursday.

“Due to extreme cold conditions prevailing over the past few weeks, the de – stressing and welding of metro tracks have been delayed for a couple of weeks and work on a one – kilometre stretch is still pending. We also faced labour problems due to cold condition. But we still expect to wrap up work by mid-February and make the Phase-I operational in April as planned. Two of the five trains have arrived and the remaining three are expected by March first week,” said Mr. Rai, interacting with media persons on the occasion of opening of a two – day health camp, “Nirogya”, for the migrant labourers at the site.

Mr. Rai also announced that labourers needing further medical investigation would be sponsored by the company. The camp was organised by “IRL” Foundation, the philanthropic arm of IL&FS Rail Limited, in association with Artemis Hospital. On Friday, the camp will be organised in Nathupur village.

On the Phase – II of the project, Mr. Rai said it would be launched when financial clearance and other formalities are completed in the next couple of months. “We hope to commence work on Phase – II in April or May. It will take about 30 months for the project to become operational after construction is started,” said Mr. Rai. Phase – II will have seven metro stations and will be built along the Golf Course Road.
