Lakshmi Kantam is Director of IICT
Mannepalli Lakshmi Kantam has is the first woman scientist to become a Director of a national laboratory under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research ( CSIR ).
She has taken over as the Director of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, one of the largest among the 38 national labs under the CSIR. Lakshmi Kantam has 43 patents and more than 250 research publications to her credit.
Lakshmi Kantam has been heading the inorganic and physical chemistry division of the IICT for the past eight years. Her group’s work has led to development of eco – friendly process relevant for the chemical / pharmaceutical industries.
At present, she is leading an inter-disciplinary team under the ongoing National Solar Mission to harness sustainable energy. In the last three decades at CSIR – IICT, she has been instrumental in the transfer of several commercially successful technologies, said a press release.
She had her primary and college education in Andhra Pradesh, followed by Master’s and Doctoral degrees from Kurukshetra University. She is a fellow of several national and international academies.
A winner of many awards, Lakshmi Kantam is the chairperson for the women scientists’ scheme of the Department of Science and Technology. She is also an adjunct professor at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia.
