Gilbert F. White Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

RFF awards resident fellowships for each academic year in honor of Gilbert F. White, retired chairman of the RFF Board of Directors, distinguished geographer, and statesman of science.

Gilbert White Fellows are normally in residence at RFF for 11 months.

Gilbert White Fellows receive an annual stipend based on their current salary and also receive research support, office facilities at RFF, and an allowance of up to $1,000 for moving or living expenses. This stipend may be supplemented by other sources if the supplement does not divert the fellow from his or her research.

Typically, Gilbert White Fellows have sabbatical support from their home institutions. These fellowships do not provide medical insurance or other RFF fringe benefits. Social Security and tax payments are not deducted from the stipend.

Gilbert F. White Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Eligibility

The fellowship is intended for researchers in any discipline who have a doctoral degree (must have completed their doctoral requirements by the beginning of the academic year that they are applying for) and wish to devote a year to scholarly work in areas related to natural resources, energy, or the environment.

Social scientists, as well as natural scientists, interested in policy-relevant interdisciplinary research are encouraged to apply. Teaching and / or research experience at the postdoctoral level is preferred, though not essential. Individuals holding positions in government, as well as at academic institutions, are also eligible.

Because Gilbert White Fellows will interact closely with RFF researchers, selection criteria will include the nature of the applicant’s proposed research program and how it fits with work in progress at RFF.

The program is open to both US and non-US citizens, provided that the latter have proper work and residency documentation.
