Delhi University Social Work Department

Department of Social Work, University of Delhi ( formerly known as Delhi School of Social Work ) is the second Institute of social work established in India. It was established as the National YWCA School of Social Work at Lucknow in August 1946 under the auspices of the National YMCA of India, Burma and Ceylon. In 1948 it was shifted to Delhi and was managed by Delhi School of Social Work Society. In 1961 it became a constituent college to University of Delhi and in 1979 it became a full – fledged Department under the Faculty of Social Sciences.

In recognition of its contributions to social work education and practice, the University Grants Commission recognized it as a Department of Special Assistance in 1992. Later, UGC supported Department under ASHISH program. In 2008, National AIDS Control Organization established State training and Resource center for capacity building of targeted intervention in the state of Delhi.

Objectives :

  • To impart education and training in professional social work in order to provide manpower in social welfare, development and allied fields capable of working at various levels of micro, meso and macro systems
  • To help students develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and values appropriate to the practices of social work profession.
  • To enable students develop critical and creative thinking and ability, to apply theoretical knowledge in practice of social work.
  • To facilitate interdisciplinary approach for better understanding of social problems, and issues of development.
  • To develop skills related to research, capacity building, policy formulation and planning.

Social Work is an activity that helps communities, groups and individuals to restore or enhance their capacity for creating favorable societal conditions. The students under this degree are required to prepare a detailed thesis on any of the topics within the subject.
